A Day to Remember

After my father died in 2000, I promised myself that from now on, I would endeavor to “make positive memories” instead of mourning over past regrets.  I don’t always achieve my goal but I do make an earnest effort to at least try.  As we have eleven more days until Thanksgiving, consider putting a new spin on some old traditions in order to make your day more memorable.

Listed below are some fresh ideas that are sure to make your Thanksgiving an awesome “Day to Remember!”

Your Family:

Why not incorporate some family fun?  Create a Scavenger Hunt for your guests.  Those who have arrived can play while you’re waiting for any last minute stranglers.  Whoever finds all the clues first, wins a prize or gift card.

Have someone do Turkey face painting for the kids.  They will surely love this while waiting for dinner to be served.

Your Table:

Nothing says welcome like fresh, beautiful flowers.  Grab a large bouquet from Walmart, an inexpensive vase and feature them as a lavish centerpiece for your dinner table.

You could also have a basket of flowers displayed on a small table when your guests arrive.  When a female walks through the door, assign your son or another male relative to hand them a ‘Flower of Thanksgiving.’ What woman wouldn’t enjoy that?

Tape pictures of Thanksgiving Turkeys underneath three of your dinning room chairs.  Whoever finds a picture under their seat, wins a door prize.

Incorporate a family friendly raffle into your Thanksgiving feast.  Have everyone sign their name on a scrap piece of paper and fold it.  Place all the pieces of paper in a large glass bowl.  Have a small child draw out a name while everyone’s enjoying desert.  Give the winner a set of movie tickets, a gift card to Macy’s or DSW Shoes, etc.

Your Powder Room:

Design a brief “Personal Note” and print it in a fancy font; thanking your guests for attending your soiree.   Put the letter in a beautiful picture frame and sit it on the sink in your guest bathroom.  As each guest visits this area, they’ll see your note and feel as if it was created personally for him or her.

Your Farewell:

After dinner, have everyone load up and go grab a movie at the Cinema.  Few things are more memorable than a family descending on a movie theatre after a Thanksgiving meal.  Not only will you remember the movie but also the time you spent laughing together.  Don’t forget, the objective is to do something different; thus, breaking away from your normal routine.

No matter what you decide to do, Beloved.  Make positive memories for your Thanksgiving.  For none of us are promised to be here next year!  So, whatever you do, cherish your time together and make moments that will last you a lifetime.  For Psalms 118:24 KJV reminds us, “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
