The Importance of Self-Love

With Valentine’s Day soon approaching, millions of single men and women like me will be faced with what to do. According to one source, “Forty percent of Americans” or an estimated 130 million people have negative feelings towards Valentine’s Day.   Nonetheless, it doesn’t have to be a death sentence, Beloved! Sure, I know some people will refuse to see things differently. They will choose to make it a Day of Mourning. However, when we see each day as a gift from God , it’s hard to be vulnerable to depression.

Truth is, dear heart, there are plenty of things we singles can do to cherish ourselves on this special occasion. Don’t believe me, please keep reading! Although I have received several invitations for this weekend, I always enjoy this holiday regardless if I am alone or not. It shouldn’t matter who is in our life before we can love ourselves but why!   Ultimately, ask yourself, how can I love a man, if I cannot first love myself?

Genesis 1:27a NIV reminds us, “So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them.”  Also, Lamentations 3:22 NIV says, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail.

Never forget, you were created in the image of the most glorious being that has, does and will ever exist; our Eternal Father. Therefore, my Beautifully Unique Sister-in-Christ, in spite of being single, you are worthy of love!

In conclusion, here are four simple ways you can enjoy your singleness on Valentine’s Day:

  1. Read the following scriptures:
    • Psalm 34:19
    • Psalm 91:7
    • Nahum 1:7
    • 2 Corinth. 4:8-9
    • Romans 5:8
  2. Invite some friends over and host a ‘Sista Circle’ Potluck Dinner or Dessert party.
  3. Take a day trip with a dear friend to a nearby city and enjoy the sites.
  4. Grab dinner and go share it with that elderly love one that you haven’t seen in awhile. Nothing will take loneliness away faster then when we stop focusing on self and, instead, become a blessing to someone else.

Just remember, sweetheart…your Valentine’s Day should always be a happy one because…YOU. ARE. LOVED!
