Are You Serving A Spiteful Pie?

Recently, I witnessed someone deliberately behave so spitefully towards another co-worker that I was stunned speechless.  As many of you well know, that doesn’t happen often!  But, here’s the thing about being mean spirited.  We never know when God is going to take away His hand of mercy and allow us to reap what we sow.  In which case, it took less than one week before this person’s nastiness backfired in a very public way.

“They were so intent on being hateful,” I explained to a dear friend, “that they never stopped to consider how irrational their actions would look to upper management.” I further continued, “It was like they spitefully created a pie made out of the worse possible ingredients only to have to publicly eat it themselves.”  Hence, the term,A Spiteful Pie.”

Quite frankly, I’m the last person on this continent that can point fingers at anyone for being spiteful.  I have done my share and then some.  Glory to God, I am so grateful to say that those days are long gone!  Take it from one who truly knows, being spiteful will only block your blessings, not the ones who you have set out to hurt.

Philippians 2:3-4 NIV says, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.  Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

In reviewing the previous passage, the words in bold really stand out to me:

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.  Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

This means no matter what they’ve done!  Now, let’s press pause for a moment so that I can make a very important point.  I’m not saying (nor will I ever say) anyone should allow someone to take advantage of her or him, or worse, withstand mental and/or physical abuse.   What I am saying is that we should never take matters into our own hands.  Truth is, they are not big enough anyway.  That’s why we have shopping cards and baskets at most grocery stores.  We are only equipped to carry but so much!

Nevertheless, the bible says in Isaiah 40:12a NIV that our Lord “has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand…” Now, you talk about some big hands!  Who better then to handle your situation and mine other than God?

Consequently, we should never have cause to make and serve a Spiteful pie to anyone.  Why not, you might ask? You will only hurt, embarrass or worse, alienate yourself, not the person you’re upset with.  Simply leave them and that hurtful situation at the Throne of the Messiah, which means deliverer.   For only He can deliver us from the bitterness of our pain and bless us with a sweet tasting victory.

Well said!! I love your post that can not only be applied to daily living but also life in the workplace. Sometimes, we can lose site of the presence of God and His manifestation in our daily dealings in the workplace. We must be reminded that we are sometimes the only reflection of God that some people see!
